Creating a Culture of Safety at Southern States Chemical
For Southern States Chemical Vice President Philip Rowland, safety stands apart as the #1 priority, uniting team members across all SSC sites.

SSC organizes a wide range of educational programs focused on safety throughout the year, but an overall commitment to keeping team members safe infuses, shapes and defines every aspect of the company’s operations. As SSC has grown over the years, the company has deepened its commitment to keeping team members safe on the job.
“Safety is always top-of-mind in every department at Southern States Chemical,” said SSC President Key Compton. “It’s critical and comes before everything else.”
For the third consecutive year, Southern States Chemical’s Wilmington site earned a North Carolina Department of Labor Gold Level Award and was honored at the Safety Awards Banquet over the summer.
July 27, 2025 marked six years since SSC-Wilmington’s last OSHA injury. Team members were treated to amazing food catered by Middle of the Island of Wilmington and were presented with collectible Case XX knives as special recognition for their achievement.
In addition, SSC-SeaPoint recently completed 1,000 days without a safety incident. The team enjoyed a delicious Lowcountry Boil and major kudos for this landmark accomplishment.
In Augusta, safety has served as a foundational value ever since the plant opened in 2023. Team members understand the importance of keeping everyone safe on the job, 24/7.
